The exhibition draws its title from the Apollo 11 contingency samples—lunar rocks collected as an emergency safeguard—using this concept to reflect on what a “contingency sample” of Earth might be in an era of planetary crisis. Referencing the astronauts’ geological training in Iceland, the exhibition uses aluminium to question extractive practices rooted in speed and exploitation. Instead, it highlights the interconnected material, social, and geopolitical networks behind aluminium production, focusing on Jamaica, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), and Iceland as key sites. Framed by critiques of resource extraction, security, and imperial power, the exhibition challenges who controls the future and calls for alternative, interdependent, and reparative ways of imagining it.
